3rd July, 2008. 10:16 pm. Progress
The front door is open; the house is cooling off. It'll be heading toward
cold by the time we go to bed.
The flower_cat has been spending the afternoon making 8 jars
of peach butter; they still have to cool off, then get boiled again. I
helped with the stirring. Colleen's mom was a terrible cook, but she knew
how to can fruit, and taught her daughter well. Yum.
I've spent most of the evening working on the massive directory
reorganization I've described here. It's a
project fraught with minor pitfalls -- it's easy to assume, as I did, that
two directories called Doc in different parts of the tree are the same,
when they're not even closely related. I'll probably finish over the
weekend.
Current mood: content. Current music: traffic through the open door.

3rd July, 2008. 6:05 am. Sleepless in San Jose?
Last night I was up at 4:30am worrying about whether Alaska Airlines would
be able to accommodate the flower_cat's inability to handle
the stairs to get on and off the plane in San Jose, which doesn't have
jetways at that end of the old terminal. All it would have taken was a
couple of clicks to find their page on mobility and wheelchair assistance, but a web browser isn't the first
thing I think of when lying in bed awake at some ridiculous hour. Not
sure why not, though, except for the excess blood in my caffeine stream.
All the worry and tension pretty much disappeared when I got back from my
walk and finally looked it up.
That doesn't explain why I was up at 4:30 again this morning.
Not much tension; just bits of Quiet Victories
running through my head.
Guess I'll just be thankful for the bit of extra time on the days when I
have it, and try not to worry too much about whether it's an actual change
in my sleep habits. Because worrying about that might... Hmmm.
Current mood: awake.

2nd July, 2008. 12:27 pm. Seeking Heraldic Assistance
Is there by any chance a Herald out there who has access to recent Laurel decisions who could check on the status of a submission for me?
I'm working on a project right now, for which it would help a lot to know if a particular item has passed or not. It should have been discussed at the March meeting. But the online LoARs currently only lists through January.
If someone can check this for me, the item in question is a badge submitted under the name of Irene Lenoir (East).
Edited to Add: Never mind. I didn't realize that the web publication was actually the finalization of the process. I thought it was just an update delay thing.

2nd July, 2008. 6:18 am. Blink... Blink...
If I wake up after 4am, especially if there's something on my mind (and
there's always something to worry about), I'm unlikely to get
back to sleep.
I really wish that this meant that I can get by on less than 5 hours'
sleep all the time. I don't think it means that; I'll probably
be dozing at my desk all afternoon, and crash early.
Grumble. I could use the extra time.
Current mood: awake.

1st July, 2008. 10:55 pm.
I'm shiny. School's out, which is good. Jury duty upcomming, which is bad. Means I have to wait and find out when I can make travel plans. Grr. Right after my birthday too...lousy way to turn 23. To any who wish to contribute giftage (Not mandatory at all, but if you wish to) there is a list ( here. )
Working on a chainmail dice bag right now, most likely not working any cons next year. Details bite.
If you want to know more, drop me a message/comment/IM/phone call/whatever. I don't bite.

1st July, 2008. 7:32 pm. Family health notes
The big health news here is that the infection on flower_cat's
right leg appears to be treatable: she's been on Keflex since last week
(which didn't seem to be helping much) and was given an injection of
something else yesterday that does seem to be helping. A lot,
and quickly. Yay!
It's entirely possible that the night sweats she'd been having the last
couple of weeks were due to fever rather than a continuation of menopause
(done that -- several years ago). She's been sleeping much better the
last few nights. I appreciate that, too.
On the other side of the bed, so to speak, I appear to have finally fought
my weight back down to where it was two weeks ago :-(, but my knees aren't
helping. I've had to scale my walking speed back to an easy amble, and
skip the hills. Grump. At least I'm walking.
Fighting the weight down mainly consisted of sticking to a low-carb diet:
two eggs for breakfast, beef jerky and nuts for lunch. A couple of prunes
to fill in the corners at lunchtime, and a sheet of nori (yummy, crunchy,
and zero calories) for the occasional snack at work. No snack when I get
home, or after dinner. Tiresome, but I like the results, and I'm not
losing weight when I'm not feeling hungry.
Current mood: content.

1st July, 2008. 10:05 pm. Plus size garb suggestions
I had a great time this weekend at my first camping event. In order to enjoy more events, I would like to make some more garb. I am plus sized- 40 DD, size 18, however, I am blessed with having an hour-glass shape. My preference would be to make a skirt or two with separate bodices and a chemise for underneath. The t- tunics I have seen don't seem suited to me. But I might reconsider if I could see some pics of women wearing them who are my shape. A simple cotehardie is possible, but I have to find someone to help me with the first pattern making for the shaped front seam.
As for persona, I am leaning towards mid 15th century Italian, German or English. I'm not too concerned at the moment about making a 'persona' wardrobe, as to having comfortable garb that suits my body shape, keeps me warm or cool in Southern Ontario summer weather.
Cash is still short, so I have to work with what is in my stash.I did find 10 yards of wool plaid for $15 in a charity shop on Sunday, I also have 15 yards of unbleached cotton that I can dye or bleach. I'm thinking the latter for a chemise. I have about 4 yards of a deep red linen and a few yards of a blue cotton, that I made into a roman chiton, but in trying it on, I decided that it was too huge- several people could join me in it- so it might get cut up and made into a skirt.

2nd July, 2008. 12:38 pm. SCA Conventions: Headdresses or coronets
So, I want to make a friend of mine a mostly-accurate (ten foot rule, I love my sewing machine) outfit from 11th/12thC Kievan-Rus. (To be specific, the more southern Balkan parts, with plentiful influence from Byzantium)
What I'm not so sure about is how much of a elaborate headdress I can make, without it looking like she's a baroness or such.
As with most of my costuming, most of my information has come from Lady Sofya la Rus's most wonderful site, in particular this page on head-wear http://www.strangelove.net/~kieser/Russia/KWChead.html - on reading that if you scroll down to the item "Venets" you'll see that it could be mistaken for a pointy hat. What I'd love to do is an etched or gilded series of plaques which attach to a leather band, with a veil underneath, but I think that might be a little much.
Your thoughts? Essentially, I want to make something very pretty, but not offend people in the SCA.
